Engineers for a Sustainable World

Mission:

To motivate and mobilize students and professionals through local and international service projects that improve the quality of life through sustainable engineering and development

Projects and efforts that support Live Green!:

Drive Not To Drive: Each year ESW gets students to pledge to not drive their cars for one week to one month to encourage the use of alternative transportation

CY-cling Library: With Architects for Humanity and the Cycling Club, ESW is working to create a bike loan program on campus to encourage bike use.

Campus Sustainability Map: With Facilities Planning and Management, ESW is working to create an interactive map displaying sustainable design elements on campus.

Sustainability in the Curriculum: ESW is developing a database of courses at ISU that pertain to sustainability issues along with which courses can be used to meet requirements for each engineering major.

Uganda Projects: Through a partnership with a Ugandan NGO - Volunteer Efforts for Development Concerns (VEDCO), Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda and the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL) at Iowa State University (ISU), ESW members worked on several sustainable development projects such as household energy and water harvesting in the Kamuli District of Uganda.

India: Through a partnership with an Indian NGO – Purkal Youth Development Society (PYDS), Dehradun, and the Dehradun Institute of Technology, ESW members worked on several sustainable development projects such as solar street lighting, solar fruit drying, and water harvesting.
