Connecting Today's Bottom Line with a Sustainable Future: Our Growing Commitment

The 4th annual Iowa State University Symposium on Sustainability was held Feb. 25-26, 2013.

2013 started the fifth year of Iowa State University's Live Green! Initiative and the call to action given to all students, faculty and staff to be fully committed to and engaged in ensuring a sustainable future through our actions and decisions regarding our campus, its operations and initiatives. This year's Symposium on Sustainability focused on the integral connection sustainability has to campus and the community in terms of sustaining the bottom line and building a sustainable future.

Symposium Overview

This year's event began on Feb. 25, 2013, with the 2nd annual Sustainapalooza event, sustainability poster session and reception, followed by an evening lecture from Charles Fishman, award-winning investigative and magazine journalist and author of "The Big Thirst: The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water." The event continued on Feb. 26, 2013, with a keynote panel presentation featuring sustainability leaders from Iowa-based corporations, presentations from campus leaders highlighting campus initiatives in sustainable energy and sustainability in curriculum, as well as the presentation of the Live Green! Awards for Excellence in Sustainability.

Keynote Speakers

Adam Hammes serves as Manager of Sustainability for Kum and Go; Daniel Krohn serves as Global Sustainability Lead for Becker Underwood, Inc./BASF; Michael Smith serves as Associate Vice-President Real Estate and Sustainability for Hy-Vee, Inc.; and Liv Watson serves as Director for International Business Development for WebFilings.

Sustainability Poster Reception

Poster abstracts were encouraged from all campus activities and projects including research, administration, operations, student/student organizations, community, and personal initiatives that support and further sustainability and the Live Green Initiative. Poster sessions provide an excellent venue for discussions, networking and the exchange of scientific information.

Live Green! Awards for Excellence in Sustainability

The Live Green! Excellence Awards recognize Iowa State University students, faculty and staff who are making an impact on the campus sustainability efforts by generating awareness and interest through initiatives that focus on teaching, research, outreach and/or operations.
